Mina Award and impression for a good deed

Shafique Jaman

It was around 12 at noon, I was busy to write a news. Suddenly my cell phone rang and received slight angrily. It was a call from news editor from Shishu Prokash and obviously impressed me. Who does not love recognition for his work?  The news was “Shishu Prokash of Jamalpur won the Mina Award 2010.” After few minutes 10 child journalists reached to my office. Instantly they shared the good news through distributing the sweet among themselves. It was a remarkable intermission for the Shishu prokash Jamalpur team to win the under 18 print media groups of Mina Award 2010. Earlier, child journalist of Jamalpur, Ariful Islam Arman and Sadekur Rahman Nayan won the Mina Award in 2005 and 2009.

In 2010, first I received the Mina Award 2010 winning news from Shishu Prokash desk. The letter from UNICEF has not reached to me due to wrong address. The letter has reached to the Daily Ajker Jamalpur office instead of my office. Later I collected the letter from Daily Ajker Jamalpur office. It was a nice day for the child journalist of Jamalpur unit of the Shishu Prokash.  They debuted as journalist through Shishu Prokash just after receiving a two-day long basic training. The child journalist took it as immense achievement in their career. Not only among them but the news impressed their guardian also. Their guardians expressed their feelings with me after hearing the good news.

“Child learns from Child project: School became the dream house for the children of the villages of Jamalpur after removing frightening”—it was the report for wining the award. The report prepared by child journalist Sonia Raihan Raha, Tafsia Tahsin Mim, Sadia Akhtar Labonno, Jogina Nowshin, Asma Akhtar Chandni, Toufiqul Islam Samrat, Jubair Ahmed Arman, Saimun Sabbir Shovon, Sultan Shahed and Mahmudul Hossen. They jointly prepared the report and I provide overall logistic support them.

The report published in the Daily Ajker Jamalpur and national newspaper. A number of good reports published in national and local dailies. The child journalists were appraised for their good report. However, we did not think about the award. We did not notice the invitation for Mina Award of UNICEF. The news editor of the Shishu Prokash encouraged us to take part in Mina Award competition. We took part in the competition. We forgot after submitting the application. But, when we received the award we became astonished and delighted immensely.

As I am a dedicated journalist, the Mina Award wining was an exclusive feeling of happiness to me. I reported a number of issues during two decades long in my professional life and received love and honour from the readers.

I gathered a clourful experience in my career in as journalist. But I have another feeling toward the child journalists. Some times I would become child with them during field work to gather news. It is a immense enjoy to work with the child journalists. I notice some child journalist have a extra ordinary news sense though they have no experience in this field.

The child journalist did not involve them as professional journalist but having felling toward the society and disadvantage people they work willingly. So, I believe this award will encourage them to work for the people in future.
